Case study | Carter Lumber

Carter Lumber, USA

A Schwank System for this 120,000 sq ft facility!

About the facility

Carter Lumber is a privately held, family-owned company with more than 170 locations in the U.S. The company sells a broad range of building supplies, including lumber. They are the nation’s fourth-largest professionally focused lumber and building materials supplier. The company recently renovated a 120,000 sq ft facility in Johnsonville, SC. This location will offer building products for commercial, multi-family, and residential projects.

The challenge

The mechanical engineer of record needed a climate solution for a difficult-to-heat lumber warehouse. The warehouse had the following heating challenges:
• Multiple dock doors that allow large cold air infiltration
• Product stacked high (clearance to combustibles for IR heating was a concern)
• Owner desired a single easy-to-use controller for all the heaters

Implementation

Trent Goodman (Insight Partners South Carolina) collaborated with Jon Outz from Design Incorporated and Schwank to produce an ideal solution. The heating system was designed around Schwanks newest technology superTube infrared heaters. The superTube lineup includes a broad range of BTUH sizes (50,000 – 250,000) and lengths (20 ft to 80 ft).

Results

The clearance to the combustible range was the main benefit of the superTube heaters, and being able to control the whole system (all 10 tube heaters) with the Schwank.ONE control is what sealed the deal.
